Reopening Plan: 2020-21 School Year

PCCS has developed this reopening plan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will inform in-class learning scenarios at the K-8 and High School sites and outlines instructional options that include distance learning, hybrid instruction and outdoor learning. Any reopening will follow current local and state guidelines, and be adapted and/or implemented to be in compliance according to that guidance.

PCCS will follow the guidelines and protocols described in this plan while continuing to offer engaging K-8 and High School programs that align with the school’s mission. Where possible programs will encourage “social connectedness with physical distancing.” 

The PCCS Governance Council approved and adopted this Reopening Plan on August 5, 2020.

Una Nota Sobre la Reapertura de Nuestro Presidente del Equipo Directivo

En los últimos 13 años, la Escuela Pacífico ha jugado un papel central para nuestra familia con mi hijo mayor, Logan, que se graduó de la escuela secundaria este año. Nuestra familia ha elegido formar parte de esta comunidad escolar debido a su espíritu empático, aprendizaje basado en proyectos, aulas colaborativas, estudios de campo y participación familiar.
Después de todos estos años en la Escuela Pacífico, no anticipé que pasaría del rol de madre a Presidente del equipo directivo, en medio de una pandemia mundial. En este nuevo cargo, he trabajado en estrecha colaboración con Todd Orenick como Director de K-8 y Michele Taylor-Jones como nuestro nueva Directora de la Escuela Secundaria para desarrollar un plan para reabrir nuestra escuela que mantenga segura a nuestra comunidad. Juntos estamos participando en reuniones con el Oficial de Salud del Condado, la Superintendente del Condado y el Departamento de Educación de California, así como siguiendo la guía local y estatal.
Estamos trabajando diligentemente para considerar las necesidades de los estudiantes, las familias y el personal para crear un programa que no solo aborde los desafíos presentados por COVID-19, sino que también se alinee con los valores de nuestra escuela. También reconozco que cada modelo de educación que hemos considerado tiene ventajas y desventajas y puede no ser la opción preferida para todas las familias. Esto es lo que anticipamos actualmente para el comienzo del año escolar:
  • El aprendizaje a distancia jugará un papel vital.
  • Los programas al aire libre basados en el lugar pueden ofrecer una oportunidad para el aprendizaje en persona en todos los grados, pero dependen de las pautas locales de salud.
  • Los estudiantes necesitarán computadoras portátiles para el aprendizaje a distancia, y estamos buscando fondos para comprar más dispositivos.
  • Nuestros maestros necesitan desarrollo profesional y tecnología mejorada para desarrollar y ofrecer atractivas lecciones en línea.
Le animo a completar nuestra encuesta familiar como una forma de proporcionar información para el plan de reapertura de la escuela. A Note on Reopening from our Management Team Chair

Over the past 13 years the Pacific School has played a central role for our family with my oldest son, Logan, graduating high school this year. Our family has chosen to be a part of this school community because of its empathetic spirit, project-based learning, collaborative classrooms, field studies, and family participation.
 
After all these years at the Pacific School, I didn’t anticipate that I would be stepping from the role of parent to Management Team Chair in the midst of a global pandemic. In this new role I’ve worked closely with Todd Orenick as K-8 Director and Michele Taylor-Jones as our new High School Director to develop a plan for reopening our school that keeps our community safe. Together we are participating in meetings with the County Health Officer, County Superintendent and California Department of Education as well as following local and state guidance.
 
We are working diligently to consider the needs of students, families, and staff to create a program that not only addresses the challenges presented by COVID-19, but that also aligns with our school values. I also recognize that every model of schooling that we’ve considered has advantages and disadvantages and may not be the preferred choice for every family.
Here is what we currently anticipate for the beginning of the school year:

  • Distance learning will play a vital role.
  • Outdoor place-based programs may offer an opportunity for in-person learning across the grades but are contingent on local health guidelines.
  • Students will need laptops for distance learning, and we are seeking funds to purchase more devices.
  • Our teachers need professional development and improved technology to develop and deliver engaging online lessons.

I encourage you to complete our family survey as a way to provide input to the school reopening plan. We will discuss our Reopening Plan and Learning Continuity and Attendance Plan at the August 5th Governance Council meeting—all are welcome to attend this GC meeting (contact me to receive the Zoom meeting link). We will hold a K-12 Family Forum on Wednesday, August 12 at 5:30 via Zoom.
 
Despite these challenging times, I am determined and inspired to offer a dynamic education to our students that also keeps our community safe. Please feel free to reach out to me directly via email or phone with questions or concerns.

Nota de Reapertura de Nuestro Director K-8

Wow, qué tiempo tan dinámico para estar vivo. En marzo, Sigrid y yo estábamos planeando
una transición sin problemas cuando se mudó a la jubilación y me mudé para llenar sus
enormes zapatos como Director del sitio K-8 de la Escuela Pacífico. Pocos podrían haber
imaginado cuánto ha cambiado desde entonces. Desde el comienzo de la pandemia de
Covid-19, he trabajado duro con nuestro equipo de gestión para mantenerme informado a
través de comunicaciones regulares con el distrito, el condado y el estado para obtener
recomendaciones y orientación sobre cómo satisfacer mejor las necesidades de nuestros
estudiantes durante el aprendizaje a distancia y cómo y cuándo reabrir nuestra escuela de
manera segura para los estudiantes, las familias, los maestros y todo el personal de apoyo.
Mientras espero el año que viene, me siento emocionado y decidido a enfrentar los desafíos
por delante. Creo que la Escuela Pacífico puede apoyar mejor a nuestros estudiantes al
permanecer comprometidos con la comunidad, la educación local basada en el lugar, el
aprendizaje basado en proyectos y reunirse con cada niño donde están para ayudarlos a
crecer. ¡Gracias por su elección de ser parte de la visión de la Escuela Charter de la

Reopening Note from our K-8 Director

July 20, 2020

Wow, what a dynamic time to be alive. Back in March, Sigrid and I were planning on a smooth transition as she moved into retirement and I moved to fill her huge shoes as Director of the K-8 site of the Pacific School. Few could have imagined how much has changed since then. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, I have worked hard with our Management Team to stay informed through regular  communications with the District, the County and the State for recommendations and guidance of how to best meet the needs of our students during distance learning, and how and when to reopen our school in a way that is safe for students, families, teachers, and all support staff. 


As I look forward to the year ahead, I feel excited and determined to face the challenges ahead. I believe that the Pacific School can best support our students by remaining committed to community, local place-based education, project based learning, and meeting each child where they are in order to help them grow. Thank you for your choice to be a part of the vision of Pacific Community Charter School!

Queridas familias,
Por favor, permítanme agradecerles por su apoyo y comprensión mientras nosotros, en todo el mundo y en nuestra comunidad, respondimos a la inesperada invasión de COVID-19 en marzo de 2020. Estoy muy orgullosa de la forma en que nuestros estudiantes, padres, personal y comunidad respondimos a las demandas que enfrentamos para proteger a todos a medida que continuamos educando. Como la directora entrante de la Escuela Secundaria Charter de la Comunidad del Pacífico, 9-12, estoy energizada y profundamente comprometida a hacer una diferencia positiva en la vida de sus hijos y nuestra educación escolar.
Como ya saben, sigue habiendo preocupaciones y preguntas relacionadas con cómo las escuelas planean reabrir de forma segura en agosto de 2020. Tengan la seguridad de que hemos estado trabajando diligentemente en nuestro Plan de Reapertura de PCCS 2020-2021. Debemos ser proactivos y preparados durante estos tiempos siempre cambiantes para continuar educando a nuestros estudiantes. A medida que cambien las circunstancias, estaremos preparados para tomar decisiones relacionadas con la salud y la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal. En colaboración con la Oficina de Educación del Condado de Mendocino, estamos trabajando en estos 2 escenarios:
  1. Aprendizaje a distancia de tiempo completo (DL): se espera que las familias y los estudiantes participen completamente y se hará un seguimiento de la asistencia. Nuestra prioridad es mantener a todos a salvo sin hacer la vida más difícil para nuestros padres. Cada situación familiar es única y diferente. Entendemos completamente sus variadas preocupaciones sobre la salud y la seguridad, el aprendizaje a distancia, la importancia de la instrucción presencial y todas las otras consecuencias inesperadas de no estar en el entorno escolar tradicional. Reopening Note from our High School Director

July 20, 2020

Dear Families,

Please let me thank you for your support and understanding as we, across the globe and in our community, responded to the unexpected invasion of COVID-19 in March 2020. I am very proud of the way our students, parents, staff, and community responded to the demands we were faced with to protect everyone as we continue to educate. As the incoming director of Pacific Community Charter High School, I am energized and deeply committed to making a positive difference in the lives of your children and our school education.

As you know, there continues to be concerns and questions related to how schools plan to reopen safely in August 2020. We want to reach out to you to let you know what we are doing in our school. While we are in the business of educating, our first priority is the safety of our students and staff. Be assured that we have been working diligently on our PCCS 2020-2021 Reopening Plan. We must be proactive and prepared during these ever-changing times to continue to educate our students. As circumstances change, we will be prepared to make decisions related to the health and safety of our students and staff.
In collaboration with Mendocino County Office of Education, we are working on these 2 scenarios:

  1. Full-time distance learning(DL): Families and students will be expected to fully participate and attendance will be tracked. This option may be available to families on an individual basis regardless of other options being implemented in the fall.
  2. Hybrid model: A combination of in-class instruction and DL, following up-to-date CDC and County health guidelines. This option would include partial day and/or partial week attendance on campus. 

What we know is that school will reopen in fall and that Distance Learning will be a component to ensure safety while learning. Therefore, we are focusing on Professional Development for teachers, students, and families while exploring how to deliver engaging quality content and enrichment virtually, as well as reinforcing our strengths as a school. Our school-wide Reopening Plan addresses the specifics of our hygiene protocols and we will share the plans at our Governance Council Meeting on August 5th, 5:30PM. We are also planning on having a Family Forum for parents and students on August 12th, 5:30PM. Instructions for the virtual meetings will be emailed to our families.

I encourage our parents to frequently visit our webpage and follow our Facebook page for updated and accurate information. Our priority is to keep everyone safe while not making life more difficult for our parents. Each family situation is uniquely different. We fully understand your varied concerns about health and safety, distance learning, the importance of face-to-face instruction, and all of the other unexpected consequences of not being in the traditional school setting. As we move forward with innovative methods for education, we are also taking into consideration that we have medically compromised families. Parents of students or family members with a higher risk of severe illness can contact me directly. Thank you for your continued support and positivity as we strive to do what is best for ALL of our students, staff and community during these challenging times.
